About Me

Debbie Iancu Haddad

My name is Debbie Iancu Haddad (46), I'm a mother of teenagers (it's like being a mother of dragons except they burn you with sarcasm).

for my day job, I am a public speaker specializing in teaching people how to use humor and a laugh yoga instructor.

I was born in Israel to a British mother & Romanian father who met in the immigration center in Beer-Sheva. When I was 10 months old the family returned to England for six years and re-emigrated in 1981.

Growing up bilingual in Israel was a huge help and saw me through a BA, an MA, and a third of a PhD. Even though I take studying seriously (almost no one who knows me would say too seriously) - my research interests focused on humor.

My MA was an exploration of Diet humor and my doctorate research was about humor as a communication tool used by managers and headmasters.

You may ask "don't I take anything seriously?"

The answer is: "No. But thank you for asking".

Writing

I'VE ALWAYS LOVED TO WRITE.

My first short story (that I remember) was about a washing machine that tore a hole in the space-time continuum, turning into a transportation device and plopping the wash on the neighbors' roof.  It was inspired by my parent's noisy old washer.

When I was in college I had a few short stories published in a local SCI-FI and fantasy magazine called "Dreams in Aspamia."

I never got around to writing a complete novel until I decided to publish a version of my MA thesis about Diet humor and what it tells us about diet culture and it's effects.

I decided to self publish in Hebrew and have complete control of the process. It taught me a lot about the publishing business. The following year I started taking writing courses, and completed my first full book just before NaNoWriMo 2018.

I set aside my first book to await editing and started the GOODBYE KIDS. I finished it with a week to spare. but I couldn't stop writing. A week later I started working on the sequel THE GIRL FROM THE STARS and after completing that I'm now working on the third part CHILDREN OF THE STARS.

I've already got several more books planned out.

I started querying the first book lately and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll find an agent and become a traditionally published author.
